Marijuana is a relaxing herb that temporarily takes your mind off the reality you live in. The aroma is distinctive, the potency varies and it is estimated that sixty-five million people smoke it. Cannabis Sativa is the illegal variety of hemp known as marijuana. Marijuana offers many medical benefits that may outweigh the side effects of man-made drugs, and whether it can be addictive or even deadly has yet to be tested. Marijuana is currently still an illegal narcotic but with its physical, psychological, spiritual and above all medical benefits, it should be legalized. Marijuana is one of the oldest plants to be cultivated. The first to know about the possible healing properties of marijuana were the Chinese. About five thousand years ago, the people of Central Asia began cultivating the plant to obtain oil and fiber. The United States was introduced to marijuana in the 16th century. It was brought there by the Spanish and English, who used it for its fiber. The intoxicating properties of the plant were discovered only at the end of the 19th century. Until the 20th century they used the fiber contained in marijuana to produce ropes and fabrics, while now it is used preferably for pleasure. The physical, psychological, spiritual, economic, and medical benefits are all denied because marijuana is an illegal narcotic. George Washington once said, “Make the most of hemp seeds. Sow everywhere”. There are people in this country who drink responsibly, people should be able to use marijuana responsibly too. Although marijuana has been illegal for over thirty years, approximately 65 million Americans, or one third of the world's population, use or have used marijuana. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was quoted in 1963 as saying, “One has not only a legal but also a moral responsibility to disobey unjust conduct”.
