Topic > The Rocking Horse Winner by DH Lawrence and Graham...

There are many differences and similarities between "The Destroyers" by Graham Green and "The Rocking Horse Winner" by DH Lawrence. “The Destructors” has flat characters, striving to be the first gang to destroy a house, in an attempt to prove themselves to the other gangs in the area. In this story, they decide to demolish Old Misery's beautiful house. In “The Rocking Horse Winner,” Paul's goal is to help his family become rich. Another difference is that the setting of "The Destructors" is in Great Britain. The story takes place after the bombings that occurred during the First World War, where many buildings were destroyed and many families were forced into poverty due to the war. The setting of "Rocking Horse Winner" is a neighborhood near Baltimore, Maryland. In both stories, the main characters are young boys, who have very different personalities. Paul, in "The Rocking Horse Winner" is an innocent boy, who doesn't know much about the world around him. Paul's mother lacks the capacity to love and believes that she is “really lucky in many ways” (lesson outline 7). Furthermore, he had expensive tastes, wanted beautiful things, and wanted to maintain a good social standing in his community. Her desire to help her mother was the driving force behind her young son, Paul. His ambition, driven by the desire to be lucky, represents a moral message for the Christian reader. Paul was a spiritually empty child who could have turned to God, instead of relying on luck, to achieve his goals. In "The Destructors", the main character "T", short for Trevor, grew up in a wealthy English family, but was forced into poverty after the war. Due to the tragedies in his life, he joined a gang and began a phase of rebellion against everything that h...... middle of paper ......a man's life is not about abundance of his goods” (Luke 12:15, NIV).Works CitedBerger, K.
