Before the economy began to recover not long ago, many people were losing jobs they had held for some time. Many of these people have asked the government for some sort of financial help, as many people have house payments, car payments, along with daily needs to pay for and do not have their own income. Some of these people are still on aid programs like welfare, and many Americans are worried that funding for these types of programs won't last and are just putting our government more in debt than it already is. I will discuss whether or not recipients of benefits from government-funded programs must undergo drug testing in order to receive these payments. In 1996 the government passed federal welfare reform, and since then states have offered drug testing of applicants and recipients of these types of programs. In recent years, many state legislatures have sought to pass laws that would force these programs to perform random drug testing, much as they are subject to in many workplaces. In fact, the staff paid by the government signs the contract stating that they will be subjected to drug testing. Funding for these programs comes from the government, so why shouldn't recipients be tested too? The legislation has focused primarily on random or less suspicious drug testing. This is why legislatures have yet to pass any of these proposals, as people argue that it is an invasion of their privacy and is unconstitutional. They say this violates their Fourth Amendment constitutional rights because they are subjected to unreasonable searches and seizures without probable cause, as the Fourth Amendment states: “Th… half of the document… in this consideration. I hope the facts you have been given will make you think a little harder and make you realize that it is not an easy thing to decide. People will always have different opinions, but I believe the benefits would outweigh the disadvantages and that the government should do drug testing for welfare and unemployment recipients.
