Terrorism and Technology It wasn't until the morning of September 11th that America began to wonder how safe we really are. As the world watched the devastation on the news, everyone sought comfort. However, often, when something as horrible as this happens, those you look to for comfort look to you for comfort. Many people have found peace of mind through technology during this horrible time. The September 11 terrorist attacks had both positive and negative impacts on the use of computers and technology. For many, it is difficult to believe that good things can come from bad situations. In this case it took a terrorist attack to make us realize that there is room to improve the quality of our technology that we rely on so much today. On September 11, 2001, so many people tried to connect to the Internet to get information about the terrorist attacks that there was a huge traffic jam. No one could get online. Modern technology, televisions, radios and scanners have saved our curious minds. Almost everyone found themselves glued to the television, watching gruesome scenes over and over again, after computers failed us. Computers weren't the only devices that failed us on that tragic day. In New York, cell phone connections even went down. Too many people were trying to use their cell phones at the same time, there was overload, making it extremely difficult for anyone to get through the lines. Another technological advance that we rely on for our security that failed us was the airport security system. Those men managed to get past the high-tech security systems and onto those planes. Thousands of innocent people have lost their lives because some men invented an infallible system. The creators of airport security were probably not familiar with the saying "where there's a will, there's a way." No one wants to admit to themselves, or to anyone else, that sufferers who thrive on pain and suffering really exist. Because the creators of airport security didn't think about this fact, or thought about it and chose to ignore it, innocent people lost their lives. This horrific act of terrorism has opened the door to many needed changes.
