Tropical rainforests are an extremely unique and diverse ecosystem found around the Earth's equator. They once covered about 7% of the world, but due to human encroachment they have shrunk to just 2%. It is a highly moisture-rich environment that typically receives between 60 and 400 inches of rain per year, and average humidity ranges from 70 to 90 percent. A high average temperature throughout the year, combined with the humidity-rich environment, creates an ecosystem that allows for a level of biodiversity never seen anywhere else on the planet. This also results in a specific type of layered design that allows the system to survive and recycle its nutrients. The upper layers are called the canopy and emergent layer and serve for the dense levels of vegetation that absorb huge amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and help slow the rate of climate change the planet is experiencing. This process also produces high levels of oxygen that help support life around the world. Along with high levels of precipitation that benefit the water cycle, rainforests are an integral part of many existing systems. These forests contain a wide variety of plants that are a source of different chemicals used to create medicines. The degradation of these areas could potentially lead to the loss of drugs capable of treating some of the deadliest diseases and which governments in these countries need to stop considering forests as a renewable resource. The pace at which they are harvesting these areas pushes them beyond the boundaries of sustainability. The efforts required by reforestation may not initially be economically beneficial, but will result not only in the survival of the environment, but of the country's economy. Widespread awareness of these ideas will help combat the natural human tendency toward immediate gratification and short-term goals.
