Late-life depression affects approximately 7 million Americans aged 65 and older, but only 10% seek and receive treatment (Depression in the Elderly: Symptoms, causes, treatments). Symptoms of depression are different for each individual, and sometimes older adults may confuse mental illnesses with side effects of medications they are currently taking. Drugs such as steroids, benzodiazepines, and beta blockers can cause symptoms of depression. End-of-life changes such as loss of independence, loneliness, and grief resulting from the loss of a spouse are also commonly linked to depression in older adults.
