During Sony's press release on February 6, 2014, the sale of the VAIO PC brand to Japan Industrial Partners Inc. ("JIP") was conveyed. Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai also spoke about the losses they were suffering in the TV department and plans to turn the situation around. The television industry is classified into a larger subunit called Home Entertainment & Sound (“HE&S”), and LCD television represents the majority of the HE&S subunit. During “the nine months ended December 31, 2012 and 2013 [the LCD TV produced a loss of] 31,540 million yen and 9,046 million yen, respectively” (Sony Corporation, 2014, p.40). The last two years have not been the only period in which the TV business has operated at a loss: it has been in the red for the last 10 years. The last two years are more significant because “Sony promised that its television business would return to profitability within two years” (Steinberg, 2014). It's clear that some drastic changes are needed for the TV industry to become profitable again. When Sony's third quarter reports showed that they had suffered such a loss, they had to turn to the public and make a change immediately. During Sony's press release they also announced their plans to revitalize the TV department in two major categories. “First, Sony will change its product mix and focus on increasing the percentage of sales of high-end models” (Sony Corporation, 2014, p. 10). This change was expected to be fully integrated by the end of March 2015. The high-end models Sony is talking about are an innovative new type of TV classified as 4K. 4K stands for 4 thousand, which is basically the number of horizontal pixels. The average Full HD TV today only has 1080 pixels, but they're counted vertically... middle of the paper... it has to rely on the gaming industry to carry the weight during this transition period.
