Topic > The Impact of Technology on Healthcare: Telemedicine and…

Healthcare relies heavily on the use of technology. Ultrasounds, x-rays, electronic medical records are commonly known technological uses and there are many others. This article will focus on one aspect of healthcare technology: telemedicine and telehealth. It will explain how healthcare has successfully implemented telemedicine, as well as the complications and downsides of telemedicine. Telemedicine is a term used to cover a variety of healthcare services. Generally telemedicine is the use of electronic technologies to support long-distance healthcare. Technologies may include video or telephone conferencing, remote monitoring, media streaming, digital imaging, and wireless communications. Telemedicine technology can be used to alleviate healthcare provider shortages and provide efficient patient care. An essential aspect of telehealth is telenursing. Telenursing is when nurses use telemedicine technology to provide care whenever there is physical distance between the patient and the nurse. (McGonigle, 2015). In 2012, a telemedicine monitoring program called Vidant was launched. This program gave patients some devices to measure their vital signs and then transmitted the results to their healthcare providers. Success was immediately evident with this particular program; patient hospitalization decreased by 20% in the first year and by 74% in 2013 (Rockoff, 2015). Additionally, telemedicine is necessary in some cases. When there was the Ebola crisis, contact with a patient could be harmful to the doctor or nurse. To receive treatment, a new electronic stethoscope has been used on Ebola patients in hospitals across the United States. No human contact had to be made to use it. The stethoscope was connected to… middle of the paper… and healthcare providers are starting to understand its value and convenience. There are many benefits for certain types of patients, such as telemental health or patients with chronic illnesses. Telemedicine can also be effective in cases where physical contact is not allowed or in rural areas. Telemedicine also has negative implications. In many hospital settings, nurses find telemedicine to be a burden, rather than a help. It is critical for nurses and providers to stay informed about telehealth technology updates. Telemedicine should be incorporated into the general nursing school curriculum. At the rate that technology advances, telemedicine will be the widely accepted healthcare option around the world. This being the case, young or future nurses, who will be using technology in the years to come, should focus on telemedicine and its relation to nursing..
