As with everything in life, there is always a beginning and photojournalism. Without the photojournalist, people not directly related to the situations would never have experienced the war front, the Great Depression or the inhumanities of abortion. Evaluating history photographically is a way to analyze what has been and advance towards what will be. Since its birth at the end of the century, the professionalisms that have been formed and continue to be formed; its “golden era”, up to its modern identity today; photojournalism continues to thrive. Photojournalism hit the world stage in the early 19th century. According to Dillon Westbrook writing for Photography_Schools.com, the British used a form of box camera to capture the movement of soldiers. The first recognized photojournalist was of Romanian origin, Carol Szathmari. He photographed the Crimean War from 1853 to 1856. “Szathmari's noteworthy photographs were exhibited in European galleries for the world to see and were subsequently copied in limited numbers and distributed globally” (Wanke). Yet most available information points to the early 1920s as the true beginning of modern photojournalism. Instructor Ross Collins of North Dakota State University states that “modern photojournalism took place in 1925, Germany. The event was the invention of the first 35mm camera, the Leica. It was conceived as a way to use up surplus motion picture film, then shot in the 35mm format” (Collins). Instructor Collins also adds that before the Leica, photographic equipment was difficult to transport due to the bulk and lighting equipment required. He also states that Germany also deserves due credit for the first photojournalism magazine.
