Technological Advances in Computer Interfaces According to the Shelly Cashman Office textbook series, the two primary input devices used are the keyboard and the mouse (Shelly, 2011). Since information management devices (such as personal computers, smartphones and entertainment consoles), the technology and function have expanded greatly. The more functionality and functionality we need from our devices, the more responsive and versatile we need these devices. We still need the standard keyboard and mouse for most information processing, but now to interact with the device we find it common to tap directly on the screen. In recent years we've seen new products come out like the Xbox Kinect and the Samsung Galaxy series of phones that don't even require physical contact from the user to function. In some cases, around 1870, teleprinter-like devices were used. to simultaneously type and transmit stock market text data from the keyboard across telegraph lines to ticker machines to be immediately copied and displayed on the ticker tape. Subsequently, from 1903 to 1910, the more contemporary teleprinter was developed by the American mechanical engineer Charles Krum and his son (Varies, 2013). These were the building blocks of our modern keyboards. Now comes the keyboards and the format or function you may need. Personal computers normally use the standard QWERTY keyboard, but another common keyboard that comes into the picture is what they call a "thumb keyboard." These thumb keyboards are most commonly integrated into smartphones and tablet PCs because you don't need anything more than a thumb to access all the buttons on the keyboard. These thumb keyboards themselves have many functions and operations to make usage easier and faster. These n... half of the paper... y. Science is learning how to harness our brainwaves to interact with electronic devices, so who knows we may never have to raise a hand again. Works Cited Bibliography Benj, E. (2008, December 9).
