SleepoverThump-thump, breathe thump-thump, breath. My heart was pounding, pounding in my brain; I tried to catch my breath, footsteps rose up behind me like an elephant chasing me. My thoughts raced from one thing to another. After locking the door, we sat in the corner for almost an hour. My day started like any other. I remember waking up, going to school, and that afternoon finding my friends, Jessica, Gloria, Abigail, Gabi, Katelyn, Megan, Blake, Chase, Baustin, and Lucas. We've all gone out many times before. For most of the evening we sat telling stories and gossiping about our classmates. Time had passed and it was time to go home. All the girls were planning to sleep over at Jessica's. Her parents were out of town for the weekend and she refused to be alone. We started our evening of freedom by catching up on our scary stories. Before we knew it, another hour had passed. The fear of stories must have gotten to us, because before we went upstairs we made sure every single light in the house was on. In the distance we heard dogs barking, three loud horns and a door slamming. We then started moving further and further away from the window. Halfway up the stairs we stopped. The roof began to rattle as if someone were walking through it. Our pulses quickened as we flew down the remaining stairs. Thump-thump, breath. We huddled together in the kitchen. For safety we collected a sharp knife and a phone. We found explanations to clear our minds, like saying the horn was a neighbor and the thump on the roof was a raccoon. As we relaxed as a group, we laughed at how silly we were, but we calmed down when we heard several doors slamming again. Staring silently at each other,... in the center of the paper... the back door opened. We yelled at them harshly when we noticed the cops were outside. Gabi realized that the cops were sitting outside. When we opened the door, we apologized to them many times. They left us advice; they said, "Put these guys down and kick them a couple of times." We all laughed, but the kids knew it was a possibility! After the kids left we made fun of the others' reactions. Talking about how we should have turned off some lights. The boys told us they saw our every move all night. Even though we knew what they had done, we still had trouble sleeping that night. We thought, what if someone came after the kids went home? I can't believe we had such a disturbing night. Now, whenever we are home alone, we laugh at our gullibility that night. Even if we still close all the doors and turn off all the lights!
