The poison in both Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and Othello, the Moor of Venice, causes social disharmony and chaos through poisonous emotions that lead to deception and death. In Hamlet, Price of Denmark, the poison initially appears in the form of jealousy. Claudius, brother of King Hamlet, is full of jealousy; he wants both the throne and the queen. Claudio is fueled by his jealousy and decides to get what he wants. Claudio kills his brother through the use of a liquid poison. The king's death brings chaos to the country. Once the ghost of King Hamlet appears, Horatio declares: "In what particular thought to act I know not, but in the whole and in the scope of my opinion this portends a strange explosion to our state" (Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, 1, i, 66 -68). This jealousy turns into death and brings chaos to those in the kingdom; Horace prefigures this disorder. From Claudius' jealousy came the death of King Hamlet, which led Hamlet to deception. Hamlet stages a play and uses it to try to get Claudius to show guilt. Hamlet says to Horatio: “Give him a careful note for my eyes will fasten upon his face, and afterward both our judgments will unite in the censure of his countenance (Hamlet, Price of Denmark, 3, ii, 86-89). Hamlet and Horatio watch the king carefully to see if he seems guilty. Instead, King Claudius recognizes Hamlet's deception and further plotting. The poison that comes from jealousy and deception has begun to spread even further. From the jealousy first felt by Claudius and the anger at Hamlet's attempted deception, Claudius devises a plan to destroy Hamlet. The King informs Hamlet: "Hamlet, his deed, for your especial safety - which is tender to us as we grieve tenderly for what you have done - must send you hence" (Hamlet... half of the sheet... .. .destroyed, such as those of Hamlet and Desdemona.
