Above is a list of vaccinations that “must” be administered before entering a public school in Ohio. However, administration of these vaccinations can easily be stopped if a parent/guardian's religious or moral views contradict the child receiving the vaccination. When new mother Chelsea Crawford was asked how she would feel if her child was in class with an unvaccinated child, she explained that she would be nervous. She would be nervous not only for her child but for all children and their families (Crawford, 2014). Not only is the unvaccinated child at higher risk, but so are everyone he or she comes into contact with. Even a vaccinated baby could carry very dangerous germs contracted from a sick unvaccinated baby and spread them to multiple unprotected babies, babies under six weeks of age, or adults and children with compromised immune systems due to diseases such as cancer. In 2010, California experienced its worst outbreak of whooping cough, also known as whooping cough. High levels of unvaccinated children in California are said to have been responsible for the spread and infection of 9,210 young children. At the time of the outbreak, over 10 infant deaths were reported in the California area, all deaths being due to whooping cough. At least 9 of the infants who died from the disease were younger than 8 weeks old, making them too young to have been vaccinated against the highly contagious bacterial disease (Falco, 2010). In current news regarding preventable disease outbreaks, the Manhattan, Bronx and Brooklyn areas are experiencing a measles epidemic. Twenty-six people have been hospitalized due to the measles outbreak, including 12 children, some as young as three months old, and 14 adults, some as old as... middle of the paper... and have been vaccinated through l interaction with those who have not placed both parents and children in an unfair situation. The decisions we make for our child have far-reaching effects outside the home. Putting another child's life and safety at risk based on a decision made through false media and fear is doing a great disservice to this generation. The classroom or playground should not pose an avoidable health hazard to our children. The federal government must intervene in this matter and establish stricter guidelines that place the responsibility on parents and doctors to ensure that vaccinations are denied only when existing health conditions could be further complicated.
