For a school to have an effective selection policy, there must be basic components. This author will attempt to compare Canutillo ISD's selection policy with the components presented by the American Library Association. The ALA article states that “a good policy on the selection of instructional materials will be relevant to your particular system and will include basic sections on objectives, responsibilities, criteria, selection procedures, reconsideration of materials, and policies on controversial materials.” (Workbook for Writing Selection Policies, revised 1999) Canutillo ISD's selection policy contains an objectives component. It summarizes the District's direction in allowing "District professional personnel to select and acquire instructional resources." (CISD Board Policy EFA, 2002) The objectives section includes the definition of “educational resources,” which the author believes could use further explanation of what “supplemental materials, electronic resources, and any other materials” include. (CISD EFA Council Policy, 2002) The main policy statement includes the following: “Although trained professional staff are afforded the freedom to select the instructional resources for use in accordance with this policy and the state-mandated curriculum, the authority is final to determine and it is up to the Board to approve the District's curriculum and instructional program. (CISD Board Policy EFA, 2002) There is no clarification as to who the trained professional staff are. This statement would be more effective in the objectives component so that the public is aware of where the final selection decision lies. The CISD selection policy does not contain a procedure for acquiring resources...... middle of paper..... .as reasonably practicable, the committee will meet and determine whether the disputed material complies with the principles of selection set forth in this policy. (CISD EFA Selection Policy, 2002) There should be a defined time when the committee will meet. The ALA recommends that this be done within ten working days of the complaint. (Workbook for Selection Policy Writing, Revised 1999) “The decision made by the committee is binding on the individual school.” (Workbook for Selection Policy Writing, Revised 1999) This fact should be included in the information component for future complainants.
