Columbus writes “Immigrants take on new identities - and a new set of cultural myths - because they want to become members of the community, equal members with all the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of their fellow citizens" (569). The American dream is always present in the lives of immigrants. Many immigrants want to live like they think they need to in order to have the same lifestyle and identity as Americans. They want to do and be like everyone else. As the quotes say, “equal members,” which is true when immigrants want to be like their fellow citizens. You make it clear that immigrants want to become more like Americans, which suggests that it's impossible to achieve. When immigrants move they can adapt to some styles as Tizon explains in his essay. Tizon goes on to say that "the first was the abandonment of our native language and our unquestioning embrace of English, even if for my parents that abandonment meant cutting themselves off from a fluency they would never have again" (645) . The fact is that Tizon's parents had to move and learn a new language and somehow abandon their native language, by learning English immigrants learn new identities such as becoming more American. People have to change the personal life they were used to living.
