Greg Mortenson is a truly influential person. He built over 120 schools in Central Asia. Mortenson believes that the real long-term response to terrorism “lies in education rather than fighting” (402). He won numerous Pakistani humanitarian awards and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for two consecutive years (Mortenson and Relin, 127). Mortenson built his first school in 1994 in a Pakistani village called Korphe. Korphe is located at the base of K2, the second highest mountain in the world. Mortenson came across this tiny village after a failed attempt to climb the peak in honor of his late sister Christa. (Mortenson and Relin, 136). Since building the school in Korphe, Mortenson has built several schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Her goal is to educate girls about the world around them. By building schools in third world countries, Greg Mortenson prevents terrorism. In a squalid third world country, a penny can get you a pencil. The cent is 1% of a US dollar. This parallels the 1% gross domestic profit target set by the United Nations. This goal requires the help of developed countries to give 1% of their gross domestic profit to an underdeveloped third world country. By donating 1% of a dollar to an impoverished country, you can buy a student a pencil; thus allowing them to become literate. With just one dollar you can promote literacy in an entire village. If a teenager or young adult becomes literate, he or she can help the entire family by reading newspapers and keeping up to date with current events (Mortenson and Relin 283). In Pakistani bazaars, food arrives wrapped in newspapers. If a family has even one literate member, that person can read the daily news when food is discarded (Morten... center of card... raising per capita income in third world nations by helping more women they engage in the world of work.
