The poet Wilfred Owen was one of the many poets against the war. He reflected this idea of anti-war in his poems, one of his poems titled "Hymn for the Doomed Youth", reflects most of the aspects of the war all put together in this short but profound poem. An example of this would be when the speaker stated, “What death knells for those who die like cattle?” (1) The speaker asks if there is any sound that marks the death of our soldier other than the sounds of church bells which are mostly rung to represent someone's absence? Clearly, through this question, the speaker sets anger as the tone of the poem to show that the soldier's death is insignificant. The speaker compares the soldiers to "cattle", which illustrates that the soldiers are treated more like animals without feelings and also shows how they are killed indiscriminately in war. Finally the line ironically contains iambic pentameter which is a natural rhythm for such a dark, gloomy and boring subject. The two novels, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane and All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, both present a similar idea of how soldiers are killed at the front comprehensively and the dehumanization of war towards its soldiers . The first novel is set during the Civil War and focuses on the psychological aspects of a soldier named Henry Fleming and how his naive thoughts about the war constantly change throughout the novel. The second novel features the life of a soldier named Paul Baumer and his friends who had to deal with the terribleness of war and how badly it affected their lives. The Red Badge of Courage and All Quiet on the Western Front are similar in the way the main characters develop through the novel to transform from naive and innocent men... middle of paper... f like The government represents political issues such as war for his people. For example, the government always chooses a small group of people, in this case soldiers, as a sacrifice that the government makes in difficult times (war). The government manipulates soldiers by reminding them of patriotism without telling them what real war is like, so people need to understand the ways the government manipulates people so they can make the right choices and not be part of the sacrifices it makes.
