IntroductionRuth, an extraordinary young woman, makes a powerful declaration of commitment to her mother-in-law and to the God of Israel. Ruth's husband, brother-in-law, and father-in-law had died, leaving Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi as widows. All three women, devastated by grief and loss, had choices to make. Naomi's advice to her two daughters-in-law is to return to their homeland. Orpah agrees with her mother-in-law and returns home but Ruth rejects Naomi's advice and wisely chooses to stay and seek refuge in the God of Israel. His proclamation declares that he was turning away from his old nature, forsaking the non-religious ways of Moab to continue to remain faithful to Naomi, her people, and their God, the God of Israel. Through Ruth's statement, God's plan of salvation unfolds and gives us a beautiful picture of the importance of commitment, of being loyal and faithful to God and to one another. THEY' 'Where you die, I will die too. 'I, and there I will be buried'." There is more than symbolism; there is reality in this. Even with her young husband dead and the chance to return home, Ruth is abandoning her past. She is completely clings to this new Naomi family and says, “I will be buried with your family. I give up on Moab. I am surrendering to my father (who the Scriptures indicate was still alive). I'm surrendering to the old world, the old ways. Life hasn't been fair, but I'll hang out with you. I intend to step out in faith." Ruth's journey through life from here was graced by the hand of God because her commitment was based on the value of loyalty, the love of God and the people He had placed in her life .
