“Twelfth Night” was the name given to the last day of the Elizabethan Christmas holidays; at that time they were celebrated everywhere. In the Christian calendar, “Twelfth Night” is known as the Feast of the Epiphany. It is the memory of the three kings who came to the stable in Bethlehem with their gifts of gold and other valuables for the birth of Jesus. “Twelfth Night” was sometimes given the title “Malvolio” when performed or “whatever ”. This was because Shakespeare had transformed a character into a memorable individual. Elizabethan audiences were interested in the portrayal of Malvolio as a Puritan. The Puritans were a religious group who hated theaters and other forms of entertainment that made people happy. The reason the Puritans hated these things is because they thought they corrupted people. Puritans believed they contained sex and violence, causes of sin. This is why the Puritans at the time did not drink and were strict about how people around them should behave (this is especially seen when Malvolio speaks to Sir Toby and the others). So it has all the characteristics that Elizabethan audiences would hate. at the moment. There is little sympathy for him in the play, even when cruel things are done to him, as he very much deserved it. At the end of the play Malvolio makes a final threat of “revenge”; this could be a reference to the way the Puritans closed the theaters in 1642. I will explore the character of Malvolio before concluding my thoughts on the matter. The character Malvolio is always negative and has an unpleasant nature which continues throughout the play leading to his downfall and mockery which, in my opinion, was deserved due to the......half of the paper.. ....creative characteristics it holds. I don't think Malvolio is a bad person, in my opinion he seems to be misunderstood. Malvolio is a devoted servant of the house, an excellent butler and extremely loyal to Olivia. The other people in the play, like Sir Toby, simply despise him for destroying other people's fun. Sir Toby and the others think of Malvolio as a spoiled sport and a villain due to his puritanical nature and vain personality. Malvolio just wants to be taken seriously and considered a respectable figure. Unfortunately he doesn't achieve his goals and is then subjected to the cruel pranks he faces at the end of the show. I believe that Malvolio is both a solid, efficient administrator with practical common sense, and a puritanical outsider who nevertheless threatens the world of others; he is more of a puritanical outsider than a good administrator.
