Many families in America suffered from hunger and reached malnutrition, and thanks to the CBS documentary, Hunger in America, the problem was presented to millions of people as a fully realized issue . Hunger in America is an incredibly influential and important film, the first of its kind, a film that presents the problems evident in America. The documentary featured hungry, malnourished children with half-closed eyes, a careless and disillusioned outlook on life, along with the complications parents encounter when trying to find food and seek assistance. The lack of nutrition evident in children would later transform into evident deficiencies as adults. Health problems would soon become a bane for low-income Americans, and the video clearly translated such problems for society. It was the first documentary that showed such images to reach such a wide audience and it certainly had an overwhelming impact on the way we view hunger in this country. Although programs such as the Food Stamp Program and the Commodity Supplemental Program (Oliveira 7) had been established, the USDA had stated that such programs did not sufficiently facilitate infants and pregnant women.
