Gabriel García Márquez composes a fantastic and realistic imagination that reflects on the continents of life and conflicts in his prose and in the screenplays he produces. He was born on March 6, 1982 as a Colombian who produces literary pieces about magical realism. His work “Cronica de una muerte anunciada”, written in 1981, was translated from Spanish into English by Gregory Rabassa in 1883 as “Chronicles of a Death Foretold”. “Chronicles of a Death Foretold” reveals to readers a pattern of plots that affects realism through the representation of ordinary events and descriptive details together with fantastic and dreamlike elements derived from myth and fairy tales. However, the novella is a foreshadowing of the events that led to the death of Santiago Nasar by the Vicario brothers. Strangely, he is killed for the accusation made by Angela Vicario of having taken his virginity. The “Chronicles of a Death Foretold” reveal themes such as honor, tradition and death. While reading the novella, honor was represented in many cases. Strangely, the actions taken to demonstrate honor were never questioned by the characters in the tale. However, Bayardo San Roman showed his honor when he sent his recently unfaithful wife, Angela, back to her parents' house because she was not a virgin. This incident demonstrated Bayardo's respect towards his community, the men of his community and his family. Another example of honor would be the killing of Santiago by the Vicario brothers. The Vicario brothers killed Santiago to restore honor to their unfaithful sister's disrespect towards Bayardo and the community. In order for her to regain the community's trust, her brothers decided to kill the man who allegedly took her virginity, in order to clear his name. The author uses the technique of foreshadowing to keep readers alert to the events leading up to Santiago Nasar's death. However, the novel leaves readers with that curious and mysterious spark of wanting to know why the characters did what they did to Nasar. Even though times are changing, some aspects of the Latin tradition are still visible in our region and in other parts of the world. The fact that some mothers still groom their daughters for housework and to find financially stable men.
