Analysis of the phobia of a 5 year old child One of the themes of Freud's work is the importance of the first years of life in the development of the personality. He also believed that children experience emotional conflicts and that their future adjustment depends on how well these conflicts are resolved. Another theme within Freud's work concerns the unconscious mind, or the part of our mind of which we are not aware. Freud believed that the unconscious contains unresolved conflicts and has a powerful effect on our behavior and experience. He believed that children go through five stages of development, known as psychosexual stages because of Freud's emphasis on sexuality as a fundamental drive in development. These phases are: the oral phase, the anal phase, the phallic phase, the latency period and finally the genital phase. These are the first three stages that take place in the first five years of a child's life. The phallic stage, from three to five years old, was the stage in which the child's sexual identification was established. During this phase Freud hypothesized that a boy would experience what he called the Oedipus complex. Freud thought that, during the phallic stage, the boy develops an intense sexual love for his mother. For this reason he sees his father as a rival and wants to get rid of him. Purpose The purpose of the study was to report the results of treating a five-year-old boy for his horse phobia. Method Freud used a case study method to investigate Little Hans's phobia. However, the case study was actually conducted by the boy's father, a friend of Freud. Freud gave guidance on how to deal with the situation based on his interpretations of his father's accounts. The first accounts of Hans date back to when he was 3 years old. Results Hans' first reports date back to when he was 3 years old when he developed an active interest in his children.
