Racism is a plague of hatred that spreads throughout our society and infects everyone who crosses its path. Jim Crow laws had forced racial segregation in the South between the end of Reconstruction in 1877. These laws meant that all races were equal, but had to have separate public facilities. For example, in the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” blacks and whites attend separate churches. This lasted from the era of slavery into the modern age. Whites and blacks even had different seating areas in the Maycomb County Courthouse: whites sat on the ground floor, while blacks sat on the balcony. In my opinion, we will never achieve racial equality, but progress can be achieved in the future. America has divided the inequalities of racism and discrimination to become a major discussion over the years in our society. Inequalities have impacted every level of social class on earth. Education, tolerance and acceptance can be used to challenge each other in an attempt to change the negative traditions that continue to exist in our culture. Say no to plagiarism. Get Original Essay In the early 1960s, whites believed they were more superior and instead of progressing as a society, blacks were treated very poorly. In particular, the film “The Help” shows how black maids were not even allowed to use the bathrooms in their employer's home. Segregation had become so unequal that it was beginning to harm not only adults but children as well. They began to feel insecure about their self-image and saw the color white as good and cute and vice versa; black as bad and ugly. Most whites generally assume that blacks have committed a crime without providing any evidence or a series of questions. This is called black prejudice. This is shown throughout the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” when Tom Robinson was accused of raping a woman named Mayella. This accusation was false precisely because of the way Mayella behaved. While Tom was very cooperative and calm, Mayella was nervous and did not respond to Atticus' questions. Eventually, Tom was found guilty and as he tried to escape he was shot seventeen times. This is also seen in the story “The Scottsboro boys” when the jury decided to find Haywood Patterson guilty of a crime he did not commit. The woman who accused Haywood also admitted to lying, but the jury thought otherwise. In our modern society, Donald Trump is someone who should be a leader and lead his country, but his actions tell a very different story. Donald said he was “the least racist person you will ever meet.” This statement comes from a man who has consistently told Mexican immigrants they are criminals and rapists. Barack Obama even proposed banning all Muslims from entering the United States than Donald Trump, that's a different story. When Barack Obama was elected president, people began to hope. After centuries of exclusion, Black Americans have been almost completely accepted into the public sphere of American life and are central to the nation's definition of itself as a political and social community. While Barack Obama was changing the world, Donald Trump shows no signs of improving racial equality. Ultimately, Donald J. Trump is as hypocritical as the residents of Maycomb when it comes to ignoring the racism entrenched in their society. Please note: this is just an example. Get a custom paper now from our writers..
