Topic > Mt Anderson Feed: The Effects of Technologies on Society

MT Anderson Feed is a novel about tennagers living in a future version of America. In this future society the majority of the population depends on "feed", a network implanted in their heads and necessary for their life. The feed provides them with the ability to search for any information, enjoy endless hours of entertainment, communicate electronically and acquire unlimited advertising. The Feed strongly influences the culture of this future society because it is causing people to be poorly educated, influencing their communication and influencing their emotions. Children learn how to be a good consumer, how to find a job, how to use feed and how to do good business. On page 109 Titus says, "Then it was meg null, because they learned nothing useful." When Titus says this it shows that they are no longer learning history, science, and math, they are learning to live their lives through their feeds. Violet lives and learns in a different way, she is called intelligent because she reads the events that are happening and how people are destroying the earth. Titus then proceeds to tell her, instead of getting depressed reading this topic, to go out and do something about it. The main source of communication in this company is through their feeds. People can talk through their Feeds and choose who can join their conversations. This reduces the time spent on communication, but does not allow them to build stronger relationships. This is shown through the relationship between Titus and Violet because Violet likes truer feelings, while Titus is more about appearance and described as "pretty dead". Violet says "Talk to me, in the air" to Titus. When she says this, Violet is asking Titus to have a real conversation with her and not communicate through their feeds after they were too angry to speak out loud, which seems like an unusual action for Titus. While Titus is with his friends, some of his friends and his feeds are hacked. This results in them not being able to use for a period of time, they realize how much they rely on their feeds to communicate and how unusual it is to speak out loud. People in this future society seem emotionless because of how dependent they are on their feeds. Everyone depends on their foods for happiness, when MT Anderson describes society he says that no one knows how to make themselves happy. Titus and his friends live their lives buying expensive new products, always going to new places and experiencing new things, yet they always seem bored. On page 1 Titus says, “I'm a null too, but I mean we were all pretty null, because for the last hour we were playing with three uninsulated wires coming out of the wall. We were trying to free them from the shock. During spring break everyone was so bored that they were touching the live wire coming out of the wall trying to get electrocuted. When everyone has access to unlimited action through their feed, they are so bored that they get shocked at entertainment shows that don't get much satisfaction from doing anything. Titus shows no emotion even towards his own family, when in a room together Titus, his mother, father and brother show no reaction towards each other, while a typical family talks and bonds. As for Titus' family, everyone watches their feedcasts in silence and chats with their friends through the feed. Please note: this is just one.
