Topic > My first snorkeling experience

Going on holiday is something my family and I do quite regularly. For spring break my senior year of high school, I had to do the cliché thing everyone does and go to Mexico. There are many fun and exciting things to do in Cancun, Mexico. Many people travel to this part of the world to get away from stress, everyday life and to relax. You find all kinds of people, from drunk college students, to middle-aged singles and couples, and older people, all looking to have fun and have a good time. Very few clothes are needed. There is little to no pressure, little to no rush, and very little to no resemblance to the real world. The Cancun area is undoubtedly a fantastic place to take a vacation. It has amazing hotels, exciting activities and interesting things to see. Thirty minutes south of Cancun lies the quiet fishing village of Puerto Morelos. When the crowds and action in the main part of town got a little too much, we wanted a quieter pace in Puerto Morelos. It had well looked after beaches, very friendly locals and that nice small town feel, we never have to worry about getting run over along the beach by annoying time share salesmen. One of the most special parts of this area was the enclosed area, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which travelers can explore by snorkeling and diving. Say no to plagiarism. We were a group of eleven people, mostly adults. There were six people training with us and, within a few minutes of training, everyone was on their own looking at coral, fish and searching for shells for almost an hour. I was near the outer reef of the beach, after snorkeling for quite a while, we had started swimming against the current and floating back towards the starting point. I found myself drifting into deeper water alone and had lost sight of all other people. You just forget about everything else. After going through some pretty deep water, it was getting shallower again. It was probably in about ten feet of water where I had seen a big scary looking gray fish that wasn't a shark, but still pretty big. It scared me, but eventually it went away and I started observing a school of small striped fish. I wasn't scared at all, it was just a beautiful moment where time stops for a while. I floated there for a minute, admiring nature. I looked around hoping someone else was there to see the amazing site I was seeing, but no one was close enough. Even after I was able to tell my family about it, I couldn't describe what it was really like. When snorkeling, it is important to follow the guidelines before diving. Looking back, it was very dangerous for me to go into the ocean leaving the group behind. My parents were a little annoyed with me because I wasn't that smart, my mother was scared of water anyway, and me doing this only added to her stress. I had never snorkeled before, so my skill level was just beginner, luckily the water and its creatures were very calm that day.Works CitedBrown, S.M., & Getz, D. (2005).
