The moment I entered college, I joined several medical organizations that gave me the opportunity to volunteer and interact with people who were headed towards the same field. When my interest in the medical field began to grow, I applied to a summer program and was accepted for a six-week medical career diversity program at UTMB Galveston, where I met and mentored several physicians, residents, personal assistants and nurses. It was here at UTMB that I discovered a career as a PA. For an entire day I was placed in the care of a primary care aide who showed compassion and communicated well with his patients. I witnessed so many personal and emotional cases that day, and my observation of the PA caring for his patients inspired me. One of the main objectives of this clinic is the prevention and control of chronic diseases. Seeing the PA take the extra time to explain the purpose of the medication and its use, and assure the patient that there was no drug interaction, was something I admired about him and his profession. Get an Original Essay It wasn't until I started shadowing a cardiologist, who worked with a PA, that I learned more about the role of a PA. Under their supervision I have had the privilege of observing how they both have very similar fundamental responsibilities and privileges in patient care. Typical patients were routine or hospital follow-up patients presenting with problems such as chest pain, hypertensive urgency, or other congestive symptoms. During this shadowing experience, I saw the PA spend more time educating the patient, counseling patients and family members, and often reviewing tests in detail with patients. I think that because I have always enjoyed serving people who need it most, building a close relationship with patients, especially those who need it most, would be very rewarding for me. Through my life experiences and after shadowing several doctors in different specialties, I have struggled with the idea of choosing one area of medicine as a career throughout my life. Learning the flexibility of the PA profession continued to spark my interest in it as a career, and I have pursued it ever since. Over the past two years, I have grown and learned immensely in my current position as a certified medical scribe in the specialty of general surgery. One of the main priorities of my job is to provide a very detailed description of the patient's chief complaint and treatment plan. This allowed us to gain extensive knowledge about the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal and integumentary systems. It has been a rewarding experience seeing patients return and seeing how treatment has affected their symptoms and overall quality of life. I also started writing at the DHR Vein Institute. I have always enjoyed the fast pace of the surgical trauma center, but I also enjoy the quieter atmosphere of a private clinic. Having the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment helped me work under pressure and, more importantly, on my time management skills. I learned to develop a collaborative relationship with doctors and colleagues which helped me better understand patient needs. While I have enjoyed working as a medical scribe, working side by side with the doctor, I hope to help patients in a greater capacity and play a larger role in their care. I admire her very much.
