Whether we know it or not, we all deal with business every day of our lives. From small transactions in a store to working in a professional environment, the numerous ways business interacts with and shapes our lives are fascinating to me. I have attempted to broaden my interest by regularly engaging with the wider business world in order to understand global trends shaping and changing the world of business. To do this, I regularly read the Economist, as I find its reporting on economic issues to be an incisive and clear representation of the real world. More recently, I read an article written by the magazine about the nature of America's "online giants"; Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook. These companies intrigue me because perhaps they offer an example of modern monopolies, which dominate their respective field but are very difficult to define when it comes to positioning in the world. Yet despite some calls, as highlighted in the report, to break up these large companies, I believe that their capital investments in the world of electronics and communications push the business world forward rather than hinder it, making them useful. Politics has allowed me to better contextualize my study of business, highlighting the external factors that can influence a company's success in a given location and political climate. Having been born in Turkey, recent questions about Brexit raise important concerns not only about Britain's willingness to accept foreign investment and interaction, but about the economic future of businesses in the UK. The relevance of this to business management was shown to me when I undertook an internship program at Zmpay Global, a cross-border payments company that regularly deals with customers from all over the world.
