Topic > My interest in studying product design and manufacturing

Before a product is manufactured, marketed, and ultimately released, it must be designed to meet the needs of the consumer. These processes of designing, modeling and prototyping caught my interest as I believe these processes are the most important part of a product's life cycle. I realized I wanted to study product design and manufacturing after attending a student conference, where the design aspects of engineering captured my interest. Could current manufacturing processes, such as automated manufacturing with robotics, be cheaper? Can resource conservation and recycling counteract emissions caused by mass production? Questions like these further interest me regarding the production aspect of this course. In June 2018 the Vivo Nex S caught my interest as its front camera is hidden inside a motorized mechanism that comes out from inside the phone's body; such technological developments particularly fascinate me regarding the innovative engineering parts of the course. Get an Original Essay Mathematics and advanced mathematics, especially mechanics and basic pure mathematics, have allowed me to become proficient at working with numbers; working with many complex algebraic equations with multiple variables and taught me how to approach problems logically and easily find and correct errors. A Level Physics gave me a solid foundation for the engineering aspects of this course, particularly with statics, dynamics, electricity and materials. Attending a materials science taster day at the University of Oxford allowed me to gain an understanding of the materials used in manufacturing and their applications in industry. I took part in extracurricular projects such as being an aerodynamic engineer for a British Youth Rocketry competition; I also lead my team in a Safe Cracking competition organized by Weizmann UK. I had the responsibility of designing and making the fins for our rocket under a tight deadline; I evaluated several materials and ultimately chose the material with the best strength-to-mass ratio. Through school-wide debates, I improved my communication skills and was able to speak to larger audiences. I have experience with video production as I have edited many videos for past school assemblies and class presentations, this has improved my ability to present ideas and concepts in front of my peers. I gained confidence through my travel experiences in the summer of 2017 in Australia, Singapore and India, traveling alone made my trip a challenging adventure but overall made me more resilient, assertive and independent. Furthermore, my travels also allowed me to adapt and face unplanned obstacles and problems, for example, while in Australia due to heavy rain I had to reschedule my stay considering the extreme weather conditions. Outside of school, I helped promote events in local shops, this developed my negotiation skills. I taught a second language (Gujarati) to children in my local community, this gave me collaboration skills, the ability to think critically and improved my organizational and management skills. Hosting bake sales and fundraisers has allowed me to learn how to bake, as well as giving me budgeting skills and giving me a proactive attitude. I can't wait to.
