Inside Out is Pete Docter's Oscar-winning film. It opens with the birth of Riley and an outpouring of emotion - Joy - with her. Sadness follows suit, along with Fear, Disgust, and Anger. Joy explains how memory and emotion are tied together as Riley grows, and each memory is tied to one of five basic emotional responses. Core memories are what fuel Riley's personality islands. As Riley approaches adolescence, she moves to San Francisco with her loving mother and father. Since the other four emotions are not entirely sure of Sadness's purpose, she meddles aimlessly and slowly ends up contaminating memories with sadness. This continues until Joy isolates Sadness. This overwhelming situation creates Riley's first sad Core Memory. Joy, anguished, tries to get rid of the sad Core Memory by protecting the happy ones from sadness, but ends up throwing them all out of their slots in the headquarters. In an attempt to recover them, Joy and Sadness are sucked out of the headquarters by a booster tube and thrown into Long-Term Memory, from the islands of Personality. This leaves Riley essentially functioning without joy or sadness, while the other three emotions are left to control Riley. As normal life goes on and Riley lives without her Personality Islands being fed, they slowly break down. Joy and Sadness attempt to return to headquarters and come across the crumbling Goofball Island, assuming that the other islands will soon follow suit. As things fall apart at headquarters and Riley begins to lose more and more aspects of her personality, Anger has an idea for Riley. He proposes to convince Riley to run away to his old home in Minnesota and have happier memories there. As this plan is put into action, Joy and Sadness meet Riley's almost forgotten imaginary friend, Bing Bong. After adventures through Riley's strangest and most abstract thoughts, Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong take the Train of Thought to headquarters, but their way is destroyed when another Personality Island falls. As all their routes back seem to crumble, Joy spots a booster tube. He decides that Riley needs his joy and leaves the sadness as he returns with the pipe. The pipe, however, breaks and Bing Bong falls with Joy into the memory dump. The two, discouraged, try to find a way out, and find Bing Bong's rocket, powered by singing. They try over and over to get out of the pit that is the Memory Dump, but they can't. Bing Bong realizes that they cannot escape together, so he stays while Joy goes alone. He promises to take Riley to the moon, for Bing Bong. Joy throws herself into sadness and they crash into headquarters, and return to command just as Riley boards the bus to Minnesota. Joy realizes that sadness is necessary for Riley, and as she lets the sadness take over her core memories, Riley wants to go home. Sadness pushes the idea away from Riley and her anguished parents embrace her. While everything returns to normal, with old and new islands of Personality to enjoy. Inside Out's cast wasn't one of the film's strong points. While no one felt wrong, the voice actors will not be recognized for this film. The best interpretations are.
