Topic > Comparative analysis: disengagement vs. Activity Theory in Caregiving

For this discussion post I will compare and contrast two theories of aging as it relates to the caregiver, explain one thing I learned that I didn't know previously, and lay out a piece of information that will influence my nursing practice. There are several theories about aging, all of which show that aging occurs normally. The two theories that I decided to investigate are the disengagement theory and the activity theory. The two theories contain similarities and differences. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? This theory states that this is healthy and beneficial for both the individual and society. For society, it allows younger generations to gain more power and responsibility and prepare for the loss of the older individual. Activity theory states that older adults who remain active and continue to participate in society are happier and better adjusted than those who do not. . Explain that as the adult ages and begins to lose previous activities, he or she should replace them with new ones. Activities an older individual can participate in include: time with family, participating in groups, reading, visiting with family, and even household chores. These theories are similar because they both involve the amount of activity the older individual participates in as he or she ages. . The theories are further explained as normal and beneficial. The two are different because of the amount of activity each portrays. With the disengagement theory less activity is normal and with the activity theory more activity is considered beneficial. One piece of information I didn't realize before this assignment is that in older individuals, decreased activity with the outside world can be viewed in a positive way. I also hadn't thought about the fact that becoming less active in society actually helps oneself and society prepare for their loss. After reading these articles, it makes sense. I believe one thing that will influence my nursing practice after learning about different theories of aging is how I perceive patients' actions. I am now able to understand that different individuals process aging in different ways. Not all patients will behave the same as they age and that is okay. It is important to realize that some patients may remain active with family and activities, while others may withdraw into themselves and not necessarily want company. Understanding this will allow me to provide the best care possible to my patients. Please note: this is just an example. Get a custom paper from our expert writers now.
