Topic > Evaluating My Writing Process

Writing requires a step-by-step process to construct an essay or article, however, everyone has their own unique writing process. For me, I write in my quiet room, at my desk or, mostly, in my bed where I find comfort and more space to move. I usually start by having all the materials I need next to me such as books, notes, sources, etc. I read the instructions and requirements provided to me and make sure I get the formatting correct. I like to clear my mind before I start writing, being completely away from any distractions so that the ideas flow through my mind. Say no to plagiarism. Additionally, I choose a topic that consistently motivates me and I know that I am dedicating my time and effort to something that excites me. However, if I were given an unfamiliar topic, say about Mozart or the civil rights movement of the twentieth century, I would familiarize myself with the topic. I like to re-read my notes, look through my books, do research and find reliable sources online to expand my knowledge on the topic I have been given. Sometimes I make an outline of what I will write in my introduction, body and conclusion; sometimes I just think about how I want all my information to be laid out. The most difficult process for me is simply how I begin my essay. I think it's a crucial step in the writing process because this is where I engage readers and get their attention. I sit for hours in front of my laptop trying to collect my thoughts and when ideas come to mind I write them down immediately. I start by brainstorming what I already know and this gives me a basic understanding of the topic before I start delving into my research. In most cases, it takes me a long time to think about what to write. There are times when I can't get the words out and I get so frustrated that I have to stop, otherwise my writing will go in a different direction than I want it to be. When this happens, I take a short break, sometimes it can be longer and I forget that I am writing an article. I try to distract myself for a minute and let myself do something else; maybe grab something to eat, stretch or go to my social media. Once the desire to write takes over the frustration, I'm ready to start again with a clear mind and that's when the ideas start to come once again. After reading Comusing Behaviors of One- and Multi-Drafts Writers by Muriel Harris, it's hard to tell me whether I'm a single-draft writer or a multi-draft writer. I think it depends on what I'm writing about. If I'm doing an important assignment, perhaps a research paper, I'm probably not ready to write until I have a goal and organization in mind. I need to sit for hours and mentally plan what I'm going to write. There are other times when I need to reread something and spend my time choosing a topic or choosing the right and appropriate word. By taking this course on writing research papers, I hope to discover whether I am a writer or a multi-draft writer. Please note: this is just an example.
