Abortion is the act of removing the embryo or fetus from the mother's womb to end the pregnancy. It is practiced using two techniques, medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion is the process of taking pills, while surgical abortion involves surgery to remove the fetus (1). In the past the possibility of abortion would never have been suspected. Now, in Canada, abortion has been legalized since January 28, 1988. The Supreme Court of Canada passed a law establishing that abortion is possible during the nine months of pregnancy. The Provinces determine the rules on how and when to carry out abortions (2). However, abortion has always attracted controversy, because some think it is cruel to kill an unborn life, while others think it is a basic human right. Considering both sides of the issue, should abortion be allowed in today's society? From a Kantian perspective, abortion must be prohibited since the act of aborting cannot be enforced as a universal law. On the other hand, abortion would be allowed from a utilitarian perspective, because it maximizes the best outcome and increases everyone's happiness. I personally believe that abortion is unethical due to the interpretation of the fetus as an object. For someone acting according to the ideology of Kant's ethics, it is impossible to agree on the abortion of an unborn human being. There are two moral principles in Kantian ethics; hypothetical imperative and categorical imperative. To begin with, the categorical imperative means that morality determines duties. In general, this imperative has two different formulations, but they also end with one idea in common, which is to be against harming people. The first formulation consists...... half of the document ......ion. In conclusion, from my point of view it is not acceptable to allow abortion. The act of aborting is analogous to killing a born child or even an adult. Furthermore, abortion does not fit Immanuel Kant's ethical principle, because the maxim cannot become a universal law and the act of aborting consists in treating the fetus as a means. However, abortion is permitted according to the ideology of utilitarianism because it promotes better outcomes for parents who had desired abortion. Even after nearly three decades since the Canadian Parliament passed abortion legislation, the issue is still highly controversial in today's society. However, as controversial as it may seem, the abortion rate continues to increase significantly every year(). For further explanation on this fact, scientific development could be a valid approach to justify it.
