Not just because I was violating a norm but because I wasn't engaging with my best friend's emotions about something she was worried about. If I were to refuse to “mirror” the nonverbal display to strangers or people who aren't really close to me, I think I could have made a more extreme case with the study. However, I have realized that violating social norms can lead me to lose the people I am violating social norms with. Furthermore, I felt that the result of refusing to “mirror” the image could depend on the closeness of the relationship between the two. I think if the person who is ignored by their emotions is close to the person who refuses to be mirrored, that person is more likely to make an external attribution.
