Topic > Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino: a brief biography - 919

Raffaello Sanzio was one of the most famous artists of the Renaissance together with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. There were three main artistic periods in his life; first was his youth in Urbino, from 1483 to 1504; according to the Florentine period from 1504 to 1508, when he, Leonardo and Michelangelo all lived in the same city; third his life in Rome, from 1508 to 1520, in which much of his work was commissioned by the Pope. Raphael's style was typical of the Renaissance, with emphasis on light, balance, clarity, order and depth. Raffaello Sanzio was born in Urbino, Italy, on March 28 or April 6, 1483 to Magia Di Battista Ciarla and Giovanni Santi. His father Giovanni was court painter to the Duke of Urbino. Both of Raphael's parents died when he was 11 years old. However, his father had already arranged for Raphael to become Pietro Perugino's apprentice. Raphael absorbed a great deal from Perugino and used many of the techniques he learned from his master throughout his life. Raphael completed his training with Perugino around 1501 and traveled for three years in northern Italy until moving to Florence, "the center of the Renaissance" in 1504. There he was exposed to many different styles, including that of Leonardo and that of Michelangelo. Leonardo's art impressed the young Raphael, and was evident in his works created during this period. It was also in this period that a mutual antipathy arose between Raphael and Michelangelo, which would continue for the rest of their lives Raphael's strangest fantasy while in Florence were drawings of naked men fighting. Although he made dozens of them, they never evolved into complete paintings and left no other visible effects on his body of work ...... middle of paper...... the Pope for the Duke of Urbino. Originally painted on panel between 1514 and 1515, it was later detached from the panel and relined , were the product of individualism, something that was one of the pillars of the Renaissance. This painting, however, stands out from the others due to its incredible texture and realism. Raphael, although he lived such a short time, was one of the key figures of the Italian Renaissance. He learned from others and his lessons were then passed on to others. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo he began the Renaissance and concluded it with his premature death. As his epigraph says: Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying feared to die herself. Maybe it happened only to a small extent.
