Advertisers use many subtle ways to present advertisements to sell products, but many of these ads can go far beyond selling products. Advertising featuring purple sexual scenes may actually send subliminal messages that violence is acceptable. Looking at these advertisements it is not difficult to see that there is a deeper meaning behind them than simply selling a product. With sexual and violent advertising we may even be able to say that rape, sexual assault and violence are alive and thriving in our society. Many Americans and Europeans are desensitized by the enormous amount of violent advertisements. Advertisements that convey startling portrayals of women being attacked, killed, or even abused in today's advertisements have given a whole new meaning to violence against women through advertising. The Duncan Quinn advert sells suits and ties... for who are men who hate women? At first glance the ad shows a black and white photo of a half-naked lifeless woman leaning on a car with the strong indication that she has been strangled with a tie. The tie is held by a smugly smiling man standing near the car holding the tie that is around the woman's neck. The man who is seen as the dominant figure in the image is superior to the women. The black and white portal of the ad was not a mistake; helps contrast the lifeless woman on the other side of the car wearing only a white bra and underwear. The women's white dresses stood out more against the black background. The black background gives an eerie feel to the advert which leads the viewer to believe they are now part of a dark secret. This advertisement according to Fowles could fall into two categories: ... half the newspaper ... daily litany in the news of women raped, beaten and killed. This does not mean that it is more right to take violence and sexual assault against women into consideration in an advertisement. In Duncan Quinn's controversial ads, Relish and A Victim of beauty showed a blatant disregard for women in today's society, these ads capitalized on very serious issues for women in society just to sell a product. Advertisers use women victims of violence as a shock tactic to attract viewers to the ad. These advertisers fail to take into account the rampaging agents of war, the epidemic of violence, rape, murder and harassment plaguing much of the world. The main link in the advertisements is violence against women, thus stating to society that it is okay to abuse, harass and violate women. How can violence against women be discouraged when advertising encourages it??
