The author explains that the problem is that even if the results indicate that you are biased, people may not act in a biased way. Another reason to limit the test is that people can fool it by thinking counter-stereotypes while taking it. No one knows exactly why people develop prejudices. The only thing that has reduced prejudice is having close friendships with people from other ethnic groups. Having counter-stereotypical experiences has been shown to reduce prejudice and change the way you think. However, these experiences will not completely eliminate prejudice. Banaji believes that to eliminate bias we must be aware of our biases and make a conscious effort to stop thinking in a prejudicial way. For example, interacting with people you wouldn't normally talk to can help eliminate prejudice. I like to think I hang out with a diverse group of people, but I also know I'm biased.
