Topic > Evolution of the American Dream - 843

The Founding Fathers stated, "Men believed that people inherently possessed the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." However, as time went by, people became more materialistic and worried about appearance. Many factors have changed the perspective of the American dream. Three major factors were the WII, Baby Boomers, and mass construction of suburban homes. Previously, people aspired to have a nice house in the suburbs with a couple of cars. Although the American Dream has changed over time, it is still relevant and attainable, as exemplified in the lives of Frederick Douglass and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The American dream is something that everyone aspires to, both Americans and immigrants. One article I read stated, “In the beginning, the American Dream simply promised a country where people had the ability to make their own way through their own work and ingenuity.” Usually when you want to achieve a goal it takes time and effort. However, most people think that going through life will be easy, but they are completely wrong: if you don't put in the effort there will be no results. So to achieve the American Dream you need a state of mind. Some people have lived a happy life with nothing but the necessities they need, this is possible because you don't need jewelry or clothes to make you happy. Frederick Douglass saw education as a way to improve his life. This realization began with Frederick's move to Baltimore and meeting Mrs. Auld. Frederick stated, “Very soon after I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, she very kindly began to teach me A, B, C” (Frederick Douglass 20). However, what Mr Auld later said would change his life. To summarize, Mr. Auld told his wife that he was teaching a black person at the time… midway through the paper… after he started acting. Everyone faced obstacles to overcome to achieve their dreams. One should gain knowledge and outwit his opponents and another through his physique and charisma. However, both men achieved their dreams and went on to do bigger things. In conclusion, as time is changing, people's mindset is also changing. In the beginning, for both Americans and immigrants, the American dream was to have a home and a job. By obtaining those things they felt fulfilled. The situation has changed over the course of 200 years. More modern people want fast cars, mansions, clothes and all the accessories that go with them. Yet, there are people like Frederick and Arnold who not only know what they want, but work long and hard to make those dreams come true. It proves again that the American Dream is for anyone with the time and courage to get what they want.
