America is the country of freedom, where all men and women are treated equally. Unfortunately, this principle is not true when it comes to sexual orientation. According to gay bullying statistics from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, “Approximately one-quarter of all students from elementary age through high school are victims of bullying and harassment while on school grounds in because of their race, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, or sexual orientation." Being distinct from the norm is the main reason for this particular type of bullying. To stop this discrimination based on sexual orientation, working with organizations like Campus Pride or the It Gets Better Project is a step in the right direction. Every day, men and women across the country are denied even the simplest civil rights because of who they love. . When you grow up, the idea of marrying “the right one” is a fairy tale for everyone. But think of all those men and women who will never be able to live out their own fairy tale because the law does not allow legal marriage. By December 2013, 15 state governments had legalized same-sex marriage. There are many things homosexuals cannot do in this country. The first is the absence of equal (legal) employment. This means that under federal law, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are not protected from discrimination in the workplace. The next thing LGBT people can't do is donate blood. This ability was taken away in 1985 because it was hypothesized that men who were sexually active with other men were more likely to contract the HIV virus. In some states, gays still cannot adopt children. People who are against same-sex couples say there is a g...... middle of paper ...... where the core values are: "Utilizing the diverse talents of student leaders, giving student voice and action in leadership, empowering student leaders for positive change in society, building stronger LGBT communities and allies on college campuses, and celebrating and recognizing diversity.” Every year thousands of LGBT college students come together to network, learn and celebrate with pride. There are many events to choose from to attend, including conferences, trainings, webinars, college fairs, as well as national LGBT events and regional conferences across the United States to a complete end, the road to awareness, acceptance and inclusion is being paved National organizations, politicians and legislators, celebrities and everyday citizens continue to strive to make life safer and more equitable for the LGBT population..
