Topic > Distinction in Leadership and Management - 690

A leader is someone who has the authority to tell others what to do, or so I thought until I started Leadership 1. As I progressed through the course, I realized I realize there is more to being a leader than I ever imagined. Peter Drucker once said, “Management is doing things right; the leadership is doing the right things.” (Drucker, n.d.) This is a statement I would never understand but from this course I do. Using the knowledge gained so far from this course on topics such as pragmatic leadership, pleasing the masses, and more, I believe no one could have said it better than Peter Drucker, and I will demonstrate this rationalization. There is a fine line between leadership and management however they complement each other. Management involves planning and budgeting, organizing and staffing, while leadership involves setting direction and aligning people. Although there is a slight difference, these two complement each other. Management is more concerned with working to advance an existing action plan, but leadership is the office that creates the plan. The manager ensures that everyone acts according to an existing plan. Similar to the leader, the manager organizes and controls, but his office ends there. The leader is the one who creates the plan and the manager outlines the course of action. The leader directs and the manager coordinates, so leadership cannot exist without management, however they are two separate offices with leadership at the helm. The four essential traits of leadership according to Jack Welch are energy, energy, advantage and execution (Krames) . These leaders demonstrate daily leadership. These four Es are not based on particularly rigid tests but on the contrary are concerned with doing... halfway down the page... managing things differently. The distinction and similarities between management and leadership have been discussed using the knowledge gained so far from the four topics covered in the leadership course. Although Peter Drucker has outlined the differences between leadership and management, one can safely conclude that these two terms are interchangeably related. References Blackie, D. (n.d.).
