The novel Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens is a gripping book that many people consider to be one of Charles Dickens' greatest works. Great Expectations is a novel that contains many elements that help the growth and development of Phillip Pirrip, better known as Pip. But none of these elements can be more evident than the types of love and their different roles in Pip's life. To answer how love affected Pip's life we must first define what love is. According to Miss Havisham love is: The different types of love and their role in Pip's life are portrayed differently by different characters. The kind of love that Joe represents in Pip's life is the kind of love that can be felt between a father and a son. Estella represents a lack of love because of the way she treats Pip and the other men in her life. She can also be considered an example of courtly love for the way she motivated Pip to become a gentleman to win her heart. The kind of love Miss Havisham represents is selfish love only for oneself. This can be seen from the way he raised Estella to grow up and break men's hearts. The love that Magwitch represents is the compassionate love shared between friends, due to the way Pip treated Magwitch even though he was an escaped convict. Herbert Pocket is also another representative of the love that friends have for each other, because he helped add stability to Pip's life. This is also seen when Pip helped Herbert Pocket achieve business success through his donations to his business. Jaggers and Wemmick can also be considered father figures because they helped mentor Pip and taught him how to be a gentleman. The love that Biddy represents is both an example of romantic love and love that... at the center of the card... social mobility in England. Despite all the obstacles that stood in Pips' way, he was still capable of doing something other than a simple village blacksmith. The love between friends demonstrated by Magwitch gave Pip all the financial and social resources Pip needed to allow him to pursue his dream of becoming a person of class. Estella impacts Pip due to her lack of love due to the way she cruelly manipulates men into loving her only to then betray them. Miss Havisham's self-love allows her to seek revenge through her stepdaughter Estella without regard to the suffering she has caused both Pip and Estella. Thanks to the love that some of these characters show towards Pip, he is able to realize that wealth and your position on the social ladder do not make you a good person and can prevent you from seeing the good things in life..
