Code-switching in spoken English classLiu YangIntroductionThis article investigates how code-switching works as a means of communication tool among students in a spoken class in Hubei University of China . The results indicate that spoken code switching enabled effective communication between students in a way that was natural and welcoming to all students involved. Literature Review 1. Definition of Code Switching Code switching was first studied systematically in the 1960s and 1970s. Numerous definitions have been provided that vary in terms of specificity and several theoretical models aimed at describing and explaining its many characteristics and manifestations. Like any area of ​​academic inquiry, definitions vary depending on the purpose of the research. Although different in their orientation and purpose, two definitions would likely find agreement among a large number of scholars: “Code-switching is the systematic and alternating use of two or more languages ​​in a single utterance or conversational exchange. use of linguistic material from two or more languages ​​in the same sentence or conversation”. (Glen L.,2011, p. 50)2. Functions of code switching Numerous researches have been postulated to investigate how code switching works in interactions between people and are introduced in the following lines. In an attempt to show uniformity across bilingual linguistic exchanges, Gumperz (1982) postulated six discourse code-switching functions: citation, addressee specification, interjection, reiteration, message qualification, and personalization versus objectification. The code-switching functions in Gumperz's list have encouraged subsequent researchers to refine the function......half of the paper......and students can feel a kind of affinity with each other because they are sitting on the same boat. They might ask a friend or classmate a question in their native language because they find it strange to communicate in English and also expect to get the quickest answer. 5. Conclusion Although preliminary in nature, this article attempts to explain and highlight the four functions of code switching in spoken English classrooms. The functions of code switching in the spoken English classroom are presented in the form of a transcript with further analysis on its types and possible reasons in order to clarify the phenomenon from different perspectives. The results of the study indicated that code switching occurred mainly in the classroom to meet the needs of students.(2002 words)
