Living with Dissociative Identity DisorderWhen a teacher enters her classroom and demands attention, she carefully instructs students on how to do the next step in their multiplication problem, her students would never think that she was anyone else but herself. However, she hides a secret that no one except her husband and family knows about. This seemingly normal teacher has been diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, or otherwise known as DID. Dissociative identity disorder is a disorder, typically occurring after intense sexual or physical abuse, in which the individual somehow splits their mind into different personalities. This is why the previous name for this disorder was called Multiple Personality Disorder, and some individuals continue to refer to this disorder as such. The owner of the blog "Sunshine and Shadows Life with DID" was a victim of child abuse by her father. , and it was never stated whether it was sexual abuse, physical abuse, or both. She was diagnosed with DID in 2009 and started this blog in 2010. She refuses to reveal her true identity but goes by Sunshine on the blog. She sometimes signs as one of her alter egos, but this is rare because she is generally herself when she writes. Sunshine is a teacher and is afraid that the school district she works in will find out about her disorder because, due to their current policies, she could and most likely would be fired. Although the fairness of the situation she is currently in is questionable, she understands that it is what she must do to help provide for her two children and husband (“Sunshine and Shadows,” 2011). Therefore, the question one might ask is how exactly does he keep personalities at bay while teaching? This…half of the paper…had multiple alter egos present, but they didn't come up as he was writing or he didn't mention them in his blog. Additionally, individuals suffering from dissociative identity disorder often experience multiple symptoms in addition to their different personalities. They may also suffer from more depression-related symptoms such as fatigue, insomnia, hypersomnia, mood swings, suicidal ideation or tendencies, and may also exhibit compulsive behaviors, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, and eating disorders (Johnson, 2012). Although neither Sunshine nor Suzy expressed most of these symptoms in their blogs, that doesn't mean they didn't suffer from them. Furthermore, you could definitely see mood swings between the two bloggers at certain times. Their posts went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a day or less. Apparently this is not at all atypical.
