A silenced individual has the power to influence how things are done in society. Words can be used to say things to a person to deceive them so that they don't even realize that someone is trying to deceive them. “It's not the medium, in other words, but the message. (p. 65 The Lost Art of Reading)” The messages that many advertisements portray are different from what they say. They can distort facts to deceive consumers as UnSpun provides many examples of how deception has been used in advertising for years. They use positive words and happy families to make you feel warm inside when you see the advert, even if it's for a depression pill. Words have the power to change the way people see the world. They may see it as fair or they may see themselves as unlucky and feel the need to even their luck by taking away the pleasures of someone else's life. “It is the word with which the depraved steal the virtue of the good, with which the foolish steal the wisdom of the wise. (pg. 97, Anthem)” They see life as unfair to some people who are smarter or kinder and try to ruin their good fortune in life. They think that all people should share their misfortunes and face the good and bad times as a community. In Anthem, corporations refer to themselves as a person and individuals refer to themselves as “us,” losing all cultural diversity. Words are universal; they are used in all cultures and spoken in all languages. They can be used to express how you feel or to describe what you see. Many people use words as a prediction of their actions, but many people will say things that their actions could never accomplish. Over the course of a lifetime an individual will experience many broken promises from himself and others. Most people have a sociable side and enjoy communicating with others. =They like to share thoughts so as not to keep emotions repressed and when people are silenced the emotions accumulate inside.
