Topic > Gender Roles in Boys and Girls by Alice Munro - 1473

Whether past or present, there have always been gender roles in society. In most homes it is the woman's responsibility to take care of the house. This includes cleaning, preparing meals, raising and caring for children and husband. Compared to men who do more physical tasks, such as yard work. It had been known for many years that it was the woman's responsibility to stay at home while the man went out and looked for work to provide money for his family. Although the intensity of gender roles has changed, it still exists. In Alice Munro's story “Boys and Girls,” the author explains the transition from being a little girl to becoming a woman. The protagonist is skeptical about becoming a young woman; he would much rather work on the farm with his father. When he asked her to complete a task, he did it well because she would do anything for him. “However, I willingly worked under his eyes and with a feeling of pride.” (774) Alongside her mother, the narrator would hate working at home. Therefore, when it came to her mother, the girl thought that he was plotting against her; all to prevent her from working with her father. “Now he was plotting to make me stay in the house longer, even though he knew I hated him (because he knew I hated him) and to keep me from working for my father.” (775) Many would say that it was woman's duty to work within herself because she is soft and delicate compared to man's duty to work in the yard because of his physical strength. The narrator did not know the difference between working inside the house or outside in the yard. All he knew was that he wanted to work outside with his father because... middle of paper... even more, but that it had to become something more than that. For example, he will have to work around the house, such as cooking, cleaning and laundry, compared to the work he did in the yard for his father. Ultimately, she knows what is expected of her now and will have to take on the responsibilities that come with it. After women fought for their rights, society changed. Despite the fact that today's society is more open-minded than in the past, there are still some gender roles by which we are judged. Instead of women staying at home to take care of the house and children while men are at work, both parents are more likely to have careers and share the duty of taking care of the house and children. All in all it is not fair to judge women because of their past. Nowadays, most of them are equal to men.
