Interventions/Medication Nursing interventions are important for nursing and patient care as they enable patients to improve, for example a therapy session can help a depressed patient feel better due to fact that someone is there to communicate and listen to them. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, 2009 (NICE) recommends that interventions are monitored and reviewed to assess the effectiveness of treatment. In order for Ms. Smith to get medically fit, the nurses caring for her implemented some nursing interventions. Mrs. Smith's depression had been triggered by her mother's death; she was referred to the bereavement counseling team. This is because Mrs. Smith also reported missing her mother a lot and being ambivalent about her family members; they found it difficult to deal with her as she constantly moaned and complained because the family thought she was ungrateful towards them. The patient was also referred to other members of the NHS team such as psychologists and the mental health team. She was receiving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) from psychologists because the patient had reported seeing her dead mother in her sleep and was also afraid of sleeping at night and therefore having sleepless nights because she thought that if she slept she would die in her sleep. It was also envisaged that when Mrs Smith was discharged to go home, the mental health team would follow her to see her prognosis and ensure that she adapted well to social life at home and psychologically. According to (Given, 2005, cited in, Fulcher et al, 2007 page 7) nursing interventions must be deeper and realize the main effects of depression on individuals. Furthermore, the author also learned the causes, statistics, interventions for patients suffering from depression and understood why Mrs. Smith was prescribed those interventions. What didn't work so well in this essay was that the author didn't have much theoretical knowledge about the condition of depression and had never taken care of a depressed patient before. Next time the author could improve his knowledge about this condition by talking more with patients to learn about their condition and also by talking to experienced team members such as specialist nurses or nurses. The author will also read about the condition of depression in more depth so this can be an advantage should the author care for a depressed patient again in his practice or during subsequent hospitalization..
