What is cloud computing:• The term cloud used in computer jargon is synonymous with the Internet. Cloud computing, simply put, is the easy access to data and programs over the Internet rather than from a computer's hard drive. • There are four (4) main models of cloud computing which are software as a service, platform as a service and infrastructure as a service. o Software as a service allows users to subscribe to an application used over the Internet. o Platform as a Service allows users to create their own custom applications o Infrastructure as a Service allows users o Security as a Service integrates security into a subscription-based enterprise infrastructure.• Many applications that individuals use every day are a form of cloud computing. Let's look at web-based emails, for example. In today's society, emails are a critical point of communication. Your emails are not stored on your computer, and neither is your email program. Instead, the program and your emails are stored via the Internet. Brief history: • Cloud computing dates back to the 1950s. Initially, cloud computing was only available to schools and businesses. To give an idea of what cloud computing was like in those days, imagine a room (often called a server room) in which a mainframe could be placed. Mainframe users were able to access information through “dumb terminals” that facilitated access to the mainframe. Dumb terminals are simply output devices. Think of them simply as a lifeless shell that comes to life from a mainframe or computer. The whole concept of cloud computing in the 1950s revolved around the idea of cost efficiency. Organizations at the time had the funds needed to obtain mainframes for… half paper… limited growth. Some cloud providers place a limit on the number of users who can access a particular cloud. As organizations grow, the ability to grow and add users will be very important. • Lake of Support: With cloud computing, the days of having IT staff in the room to solve problems are long gone. Customer service for cloud-based apps leaves a lot of room for improvement. If you leave an email, it may take some time for someone to respond. This delay in time can really hurt a company that is heavily dependent on its applications to successfully run its business. The future of cloud computing: • Software moves away from hardware: The future of cloud computing is bright. With the advent of cloud computing, organizations no longer have on-site servers for operations. • Low-power processors and cheaper cloud • Greater security and reliability -
