Topic > Porn and Its Side Effects - 1968

Pornography can be defined as the use of sexually explicit materials intended primarily for sexual arousal. It has been the subject of great concern especially in relation to violence against women and moral degradation in society (Slade). The emergence of the Internet has led to increased consumption of pornography by individuals of all ages, especially among young people. Pornographic content is more explicit than ever in the history of humanity, while accessibility has become much easier. It is a major social problem that has sparked much debate in many circles, including feminists, politicians and liberal thinkers (Easton). One of the most harmful effects of pornography is that it destroys relationships between people as it influences individuals' perceptions of others. Furthermore, it encourages unrealistic sexual expectations, degrades women, increases disloyalty in families, and even encourages violence and promiscuity. More young adults are obsessed with using pornographic content than 20 years ago, and research shows that this obsession has negative effects such as difficulty in face-to-face interactions. It might seem that censoring pornography would eliminate the obsession, but if censorship increases, curiosity about porn will also increase and this will lead to more usage, resulting in a back and forth fight rather than a solution. History of pornography It can be noted that in a certain sense, pornography has always been linked to the progress of technology and means of communication. Its critical history can be traced back to an author known as Nicolas-Edme Rétif de la Bretonne who wrote a pornographic novel in 1798. Arguably, he played an important role in defi...... middle of paper..... . all activities in the early stages of life (McCarthy 85). This presents great risks, such as giving birth at a young age or, worse, contracting dangerous diseases such as HIV/AIDS (Sinković, Stulhofer, and Božić 633). Pornography degrades the moral values of a society. With the rise of pornography in contemporary society, sex is no longer a sacred act shared between two people who love each other. Many people have abused sex, while promiscuity has increased (Sabo 150). Furthermore, people's perception of sex and women has changed. Women are seen as objects or instruments of sexual satisfaction. They are no longer respected while men expect sexual gratification from acts that can even be called bestial. The effects are far reaching as youth as young as 12 have been nurtured with the same perception (Peter and Valkenburg 179).
