Topic > Social Darwinism: History of the Study of Eugenics

The study of eugenics has been around for many years. China has a major birth control system that includes the one-child policy and eugenics. Eugenics is a system for improving the human population by promoting the reproduction of the most socially desirable individuals and preventing the reproduction of socially undesirable ones. Eugenics comes from the Greek word meaning “good” or “well-born.” It is the belief that some people are genetically superior to others; and that inherits the mental and psychological traits of its relatives. Eugenics has many negative effects on society. Through the theory of Social Darwinism, the use of sterilization and genetic engineering, eugenics has become one of the biggest debates in China and is slowly spreading to the United States. Eugenics originated in the late 19th century during the Social Darwinism movement. It was proposed by Francis Galton, cousin of Charles Darwin. Social Darwinism promotes “survival of the fittest” suggesting that competition between individuals, groups, or nations drives social evolution in human societies; resulting in the strongest survivor (Kevles). Eugenics subsequently identifies the “fittest” or “desirable” individuals and allows them to reproduce; therefore, seeking to perfect humanity by eliminating the "weak" or "undesirable". Eugenics began to flourish dynamically after the rediscovery of Mendel's theory in 1900. He argued that the biological constitution of organisms is formed by certain aspects, later identified with genes (Kevles). The argument that the gene pool was a very important factor in reproduction led to the action of selecting only “desirable” individuals. Through laboratory work, reports and articles by scientists it has been assumed that every individual...... middle of paper ......ethics”). This means that before the child is born, a scientist can genetically modify the child to be one of the “fittest” individuals. They remove all the unwanted genes the child will have and replace them with genetically produced DNA. Eugenics has been around for many years and is continually growing. What started as a way to improve society is now being taken away. Through social Darwinism, sterilization, and genetic engineering, eugenics has remained an endless debate throughout the United States. While some may think that eugenics is helping society stay in line with Social Darwinism, it is actually tearing our country apart. Sterilization and genetic engineering harm humans physically and mentally. Ultimately, the entire human generation can lead to mutation if the stratagems of human genetic engineering are not removed as soon as possible (“Human Genetics”).
