Topic > Kingdom of Work - 1376

Separation can develop from anywhere or from anyone over periods of time as people's needs, desires and goals are very different. The variety of people with dissimilar interests can cause tensions between groups, especially in the modern era. There are three categories that have contributed to physical and abstract separation, all in the realm of work: workers versus machines, skilled labor versus unskilled labor, and immigrant workers versus non-immigrant workers. These three intertwine and connect with each other in the world of work. Along with the lectures, historians and writers Herbert G. Gutman, J.M. Roberts, Ann L. Stoler, and Rudyard Kipling addressed the causes and consequences arising from the three categories, which led to the separation. The effects divided the workers from each other, thus creating the idea of separation. Before the modern era, workers generally created their own products by hand, but this type of work process has changed dramatically with the advent of new technologies and resources. Because of this change, workers were no longer connected to their products; since they were no longer involved in production, they were essentially separated from creation. During the Industrial Revolution and Second Industrial Revolution, otherwise known as the Technological Revolution, the rise of technology brought new machinery that replaced workers. Workers controlled by machines; as mentioned in the lesson, workers lost all control when they were part of the assembly line. Even in Charlie Chaplin's film Modern Times, workers had little to no control over the pace of work, and the slightest distraction can slow down production. This was how workers and work were described in the mechanized world. Herbert G. Gutman exp...... center of paper ......people actively divided; immigrants arrived to work and improve their lives and that of their families, but instead they were discriminated against and kicked out. What makes people different in society can lead to the process of separation; it can be good in terms of originality for an individual, but disastrous in the workplace. Separation of work has been shown to cause tensions between skilled, unskilled, immigrant and non-immigrant workers. The division between them was both physical and abstract; cars separated them as did race and their opinions. People were forced to band together and work together, but their differences created isolation and an inefficient work environment. It is inevitable to gather different people in one place without conflict. Separation has been analyzed as a result of the way people work, behave and interact with others in society.
