It is a theory of behavior, evolved from systems theory that is based on the premise that all our behavior is internally motivated to satisfy physical and/or psychological needs. This means that you have control over your actions intrinsically and not influenced by external or extrinsic factors. Glasser (1999) explains that all we do in our lives is behave well and that we choose our behavior in an attempt to satisfy one or more of the five basic human needs that are embedded in our genetic structure: belonging, enjoyment, freedom. , power and survival. Glasser suggests that we rely on our knowledge and skills, which maneuver us to meet our basic human needs as identified in Maslow's needs theory model (physiological, safety, social, and self-actualization needs). It suggests that these needs are the overarching motivation for everything we do. The individual may not be fully mentally aware of his or her basic needs, but those needs will indirectly motivate his or her choices. The strength of each need varies from person to person. For example, some are more driven by the social need to love and belong, while others are more driven by the need to exist
